Boat Tours & Day Cruises from Zakynthos

Fourteen well-reviewed boats leave Zakynthos on a normal summer day, and they answer two different questions. The Shipwreck and Blue Caves land-and-sea tours from $41 collect you by coach on the east side and put you on a boat on the north or west coast. The turtle and Keri Caves boats from $31 never leave Laganas Bay in the south, where the loggerheads are and the Shipwreck is not.

The fact that catches people out is geography. Navagio sits on the west coast, the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari in the far north, Marathonisi and the Keri caves in the south — the two ends of the island are an hour and a half apart by road. No boat does all of it from one pier, and the listings promising a full island day are selling the coach, not the hull.

Landing on Navagio is prohibited: the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Municipality of Zakynthos hold a zero-landing policy after the rockfalls, so every boat here views the wreck from the water. If the boat is not the point and you have a car, the operator at Porto Vromi Maries runs the same crossing hourly for €30 — the arithmetic is below.

Porto Vromi, on the west coast, is the closest water to Navagio and the reason the boat-only cruises are short. It is also the trap: there are two Porto Vromi. Maries is reached down from the village of Maries, Anafonitria from Anafonitria to the north, and the island guide welcometozante.com puts them roughly sixteen kilometres apart by road with no direct link — half an hour of switchbacks if you take the wrong descent. Agios Nikolaos, in the north-east near Volimes, is the working port for the Blue Caves, not to be confused with Agios Sostis in Laganas Bay, where the Myzithres speedboat loads. Cave-only runs from here are an hour; combined cave-and-Shipwreck sailings take two and a half to three, because Navagio is around the top of the island and down the far side. Cape Skinari at the northern tip is the other cave departure, the Potamitis family running from the jetty below the windmills.

Keri and Limni Keriou in the south-west send small boats to the Keri arches and Eros cave; Laganas and Agios Sostis send the turtle boats and the self-drive speedboats; Zakynthos Town harbour loads the big-deck ships including the pirate-ship cruise, the only listing you can walk to from a town hotel. KTEL's island buses cost €1.80 to €3.60 and serve residents rather than visitors: Volimes gets one run a day, and only the seasonal mid-June to mid-September bus to Porto Vromi and the Navagio viewpoint is a real public link to the west coast.

Shipwreck-zakynthos.com runs from Porto Vromi Maries every hour between nine and five, daily from May to October. The trip is three hours, costs €30 per person, reaches the wreck in fifteen to twenty minutes and makes three swimming stops — the west-coast caves, Hidden Treasure Cave, White Beach and Porto Steniti among them. Parking at the harbour is free.

Two adults reach Navagio and swim the west coast for about €60, against two seats at $35 each on the cheapest bookable Porto Vromi cruise — close enough that the choice is cancellation terms and language, not money. The saving is against the land-and-sea tours, where each seat on the most-booked boat on the island is $41. What €60 does not buy: the coach, the clifftop viewpoint, or a refund if the swell closes the harbour after a ninety-minute drive.

The logic repeats twice. At Cape Skinari the Potamitis brothers charge €15 for a forty-minute Blue Caves circuit and €30 for the two-and-a-half-hour version that adds the Shipwreck. And if the question is Kefalonia, Ioniansea Ferries sails Agios Nikolaos to Pessada in one hour forty-five minutes for around €13 one way, roughly six times a week from mid-June to late September.

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos covers 89 square kilometres of Laganas Bay in four zones. Zone A, which includes Sekania — the densest loggerhead nesting beach in the Mediterranean — is closed to all navigation, mooring and fishing through the nesting season from the first of May to the end of October, and Sekania is open to researchers only. Zone B allows boats but caps them at six knots and forbids anchoring; Zone C keeps the ceiling and permits mooring. It applies to every turtle boat on this page whatever the listing calls it: a "speedboat tour" of Laganas Bay is a speedboat only on the way to the bay.

Marathonisi, the island every turtle listing photographs, sits in Zone B with a cap of two hundred visitors at a time, access from seven until sunset and a standing ban on umbrellas; Gerakas is capped at three hundred and fifty. ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, has published case after case of adult turtles killed or injured by boat strikes inside the park and criticised the authorities for recording violations without imposing fines.
